We Lost Our Magic After Frusciante Left Admits Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea

We Lost Our Magic After Frusciante Left Admits Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea

The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ super-talented bassist Flea has admitted that the band has indeed lost some of its ‘magic’ since the departure of guitarist John Frusciante.

The Californian band split ways with their long-running guitarist John Frusciante in 2009 after he went onto focus on his solo career, and replaced him with ex-Warpaint guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. After spending the majority of their career with Frusciante, during which Flea claimed he had ‘established a language together’, it’s understandable that the band had a harder time getting the same feel when working with Klinghoffer.

When asked whether he found Frusciante’s departure made any difference to the group, Flea replied “A lot! John and I had established such a language together – if I started playing bass with John, he'd make awesome grooves that we didn't need to talk about or think about.

“With Josh, we'd start playing something and I'd be like, 'OK, when is he going to do that magic thing where we create the cosmic perfect groove?' and he just wouldn't do it. But then I realised that I was sitting there waiting for something because it's what I was used to, and that I need to let Josh be Josh.”
