Adam Sandler 's new comedy 'Jack and Jill, which boasts an all-star cast including Al Pacino and Katie Holmes, has scored zero on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on the opinions of 33 critics thus far.
The movie focuses on Sandler's character Jack Sadelstein, a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles who dreads the Thanksgiving visit of his identical twin sister Jill - her aggressive nature turns Jack's tranquil life upside down every year. So far, the big-budget comedy has taken a mauling, with Los Angeles Times critic Robert Abele bluntly noting, "Feels like an elementary school recess that's gone on too long". Andrew Barker of Variety magazine went further, saying, "The pic's general stupidity, careless direction and reliance on a single-joke premise that was never really funny to begin with are only the most obvious of its problems". It was perhaps Mary F.Pols, writing for Time Magazine, who summed up the general consensus, saying, "More than 24 hours has passed since I watched the new Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill and I am still dead inside". The damning reviews meant the film scored zero per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, a website that scores a film based on the collective thoughts of movie critics. To put the score into perspective - the 2004 film 'Catwoman, generally considered to be one of the worst movies of the past 20 years, scored 7 per cent. The Britney Spears film 'Crossroads' scored 14 per cent, while Madonna's critically derided 'Swept Away' managed 5 per cent.
The reviews will come as a blow to Sandler, who has been working on the project for several years with a reported budget of $80 million. The film opens in the U.S. from Friday (11th November 2011).
