Cowell delight at Gervais Globes return

Simon Cowell has thrown his support behind Ricky Gervais as the host of the 2012 Golden Globes and he is actively encouraging the funnyman to be even more controversial.

The British comedian has been picked to return to the role after causing outrage at the 2011 ceremony by making jokes at the expense of celebrity guests including Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks and Angelina Jolie.

Gervais was widely expected not to be invited back to host another Golden Globes prizegiving following the uproar, but he is now preparing to return for a third time next year.

Actor Liam Neeson has already spoken in support of the funnyman, insisting: "Hollywood needs a shake-up," and now TV mogul Cowell has revealed he is hoping Gervais will hurl even more insults at the stars.

He tells the Daily Express: "I think he'll be harder on the stars this time. And you know what? I think these people have to have a better sense of humour. Who cares if he makes a few insults? I'd love to be in the audience getting insulted."
