The 16-year-old wannabee fell to pieces in front of his mentor and Gary's Take That band mate Robbie Williams and feared he had blown his chances of reaching the live finals.
'He found the pressure really difficult,' a source told The Sun.
'He messed up one of his songs then started crying when he feared he had blown his chance. Gary and Robbie were really worried.'
Meanwhile, in the Girls category, both Amelia Lily and Janet Devlin proved a hit with mentor Kelly Rowland and her judging partner Jennifer Hudson.
Amelia sung Katy Perry’s ‘Extraterrestrial’ as Kelly Rowland beamed with pride.
The former Destiny's Child singer added after the performance: Wow! That made me think, Katy who?! She sung that song like oh no, I wrote this! This is my song!'
Although Kelly enjoyed Janet’s rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’, she admitted she wants the Irish teenager to be more confident.
Last week, it was revealed Sian Phillips had had to leave the competition as she was unable to get a U.S. visa, which meant Sarah Watson was called up to take her place.
Kelly and Jennifer later admit they are unsure whether she is ready for the pressures of the show and were also disappointed by Melanie McCabe's efforts to impress.
The X Factor returns to ITV1 tonight.
