Justin Timberlake to sing and act in Coen brothers film Inside Lewis Davis

The Coen brothers have signed up Justin Timberlake for a new movie about folk music. (PA)

The former 'N Sync star has been selected to take on the role of a struggling folk musician in the forthcoming Inside Llewyn Davis.
He has been given a major role with Joel and Ethan Coen clearly wanting to make use of the 30-year-old's varied talents.

The singer turned actor has taken a series of major roles since starring in Alpha Dog back in 2006, featuring in recent rom-com Friends With Benefits alongside Mila Kunis and new futuristic thriller In Time.
This new movie is said to be loosely based on the life of American folk singer Dave van Ronk, who presided over the burgeoning folk music scene in Greenwich Village, New York, in the early 1960s along with the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

Van Ronk played a key part in the Village scene, helping new acts make a name for themselves and offering advice.

The lead role as the fictional Llewyn Davis will be taken by Oscar Isaac, who recently featured in Madonna's W.E, while Carey Mulligan has signed up for a major role in the flick.
