It’s been a year of sequels and prequels and no doubt, 2012 will be full of them too.
We at Purple Revolver take a look at some of the most exciting film releases we can look forward to for 2012.
The Avengers (May 4th)
Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and The Hulk have all had their solo glory over the years and 2012 is the year they all come together for the first time on film.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has taken the directorial reigns, which no doubt means there will be no special effect expense spared.
Starring Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, comic-con regulars and film buffs will definitely be excited for this one.
Men in Black 3 (May 25th)
More than a decade since the last Men in Black adventure, Will Smith once again throws on that infamous suit.
When the world is threatened by an evil alien, Agent Jay travels back in time to 1969, where he teams up with the younger Agent Kay to stop an evil villain named Boris (Jemaine Clement) from destroying the world in the future.
However cynical you are about sequels, you definitely won’t want to miss out on this one.
The Amazing Spider Man (July 3rd)
British actor Andrew Garfield is the latest guy to take on Spidey. Going back to High School, Peter Parker once again struggles with his hormones, his spandex and err, his spidey senses.
Although it’s a little early for a prequel, Andrew has already been praised for his portrayal of the infamous hero and with Emma Stone playing the leading lady, these two will cement themselves as some of the best young actors of the year.
The Dark Knight Rises (July 20th)
Christopher Nolan’s adaptations of billionaire Bruce Wayne have won fans and critics over. The Dark Knight Rises takes place eight years after The Dark Knight, and Batman faces new challenges in the form of brutal Bane and Catwoman.
Fans of the original comic are excited to see Bane as the baddy and if Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bronson is anything to go by, he’s going to make an awesome villain!
Total Recall (August 3rd)
1990 saw the first attempt at this Philip K. Dick classic and Arnie didn’t disappoint. It’s no wonder then, that movie fans are sceptical of yet another re-make.
Colin Farrell will be playing Douglas Quaid, which is an interesting and somewhat controversial choice. Jessica Biel will be playing Melina and stars Kate Beckingsale and Ethan Hawke also feature.
Unlike the original, the story all takes place on one planet. Only true sci-fi fans will be able to judge whether this will be a hit or a miss.
Expendables 2 (August 17th)
The plot is still firmly under Stallone’s biceps, but if the first film was anything to go by this’ll be an awesome treat of true 90’s style action.
The original cast of the first film all make an appearance including Arnie, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis. Expect explosions, over the top plots and plenty of brilliant one-liners.
Dredd (September 21st)
Sylvestor Stallone first took on the role back in 1995 and the film itself was kind of so bad, that it was kind of good. Stallone was the perfect choice for Street judge, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot.
This time, Karl Urban takes on the character, with Pete Travis directing. They’ve got some big boots to fill but not too much to improve on!
The Hobbit (December 4th)
J.R.R. Tolkien’s infamous story of how Bilbo Baggins came to find that ring has been screaming out at Hollywood ever since the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
It comes as no surprise then that Peter Jackson has taken the reigns once again to showcase this magical story.
British actor Martin Freeman is Bilbo, which has made many movie critics raise an eyebrow or two. This will be the first of two films for the story, so be sure to cement your seat in the front row!
